Daily ITT blog, Practicum 1 Day 6

Today in Bargain Bytes there was a lot of technical problems in the shop. Today started off with a lot of customers making it a very hard to work environment. Corey brought his Desktop which I haven't seen yet which we had to use cause of file transferring for a Mac machine. Me and Corey also discussed what we will be doing for our Practicum project, which he will do the Bagain Bytes Website and I will be doing the Adept computers Website when the 2nd practicum starts. The computer I worked on yesterday was not improving at all which really confused me which I didn't have time to find out the problem.

I started making calls today telling people that their computers are ready and such.

Daily ITT Practicum Blog - Placement #1 Day 5

Today in Bargain Bytes computers have started to decrease dramaticly, very few computers to work on today. With the computers I worked on one of them in particular was esspecially slow, taking several minuites just to load Mozilla Firefox. I never got a chance to finish that computer and it is doubtful i will finish next day too. Other than that I am planning on selling parts of my old computer to Corey. I will send my Graphics card to him later.

Also to note, my mom has been talking to her friends about me fixing computers and my neighbors computer was dumped on me yesterday. I have been doing scans on it this morning and will continue later.

Today I did more or less the same thing I have been doing for the past few days, I have been labled the sticker boy because they jokeingly make me put all the stickers on the new machines. I watched Vince, the other employee with Geno build a computer for a little boys birthday present I found the case to be rather flashy and not my style though. I did more virus scanning and installing of Windows.

Today I met a different employee named Lindsey. He made a large amount of the discs for drivers and isntalling windows. Today me and Lindsey were installing a XP machine when we were looking for drivers the updater would not work for windows. We looked everywhere for solutions when we found one in particular that worked and I put a copy of the fix on my USB drive incase I install a XP machine again.

Today during my practicum I did several fresh re installs on Windows 7 machines. unlike the previous systems these were not new machines that i worked on so I had to find drivers online. I did fresh installs on a toshiba laptop, and 2 acer laptops. re installing systems take quite a bit of time so besides talking to customers this is all I did. I used a programs called lins installer which installs many programs including mozila firefox, avast, and Ccleaner.

Sept 27/13

Today in class I felt completely lost. We worked on Microsoft Access which in my mind was like a super hard advanced version of Excel. I looked up guides for myself but none of them really seamed to help me understand it much better. Hopefully with time i can get better at it.

September 19th/13

Today in Class we took a break from our A+ and IC3 Studies to perfect our Cover Letters, Resumes and Initial Contact techniques with future employers and practicum employers. I found this relatively easy considering I already have a job and I have been working with resumes sense I was 10, when I was acting. Still it was a nice experience to say the least. I learned a lot about how to approach a conversation to a future employer.

November 21/13 Practicum #1 day #1

          Today was my first day at my practicum at Bargain Bytes. My inital thoughts when i went in there were me mostly being nervous about first impressions which i think i made a good first impression. For the first part of the day I mostly was doing fresh installation of Windows 7, and I was also being shown how to install certain drivers for the computer with discs, which in class we installed drivers online or from USB so it was a nice change.

          Another thing i did today was i learned about how to maneuver around a very small case with a mini-atx power supply on a very small case. Afterwards i got to work on a very similar case, (except this one was very dirty from cigarette smoke) and recover RAM from a garbage computer. Everything was so tight together that I had to remove the front part of the case of the computer and move the disk drive just to get to the RAM. After that I did a bunch of virus scanning along with CCleaner.

         All in all It was very fun just looking around a seeing all the computers and parts all around. Today was a great learning experience for me. I am excited for tomorrow to experience more.

Today was our last regular class until practicum which is scary thought for me. I am excited and nervous at the same time cause i want to give a good impression. I am hoping that my practice with the class will help.

In class we did a bunch of review and made flash cards and quizzed each other for a little bit. Afterwards people set up to play Halo combat evolved on the computers while others caught up on their assignments and blogs. I caught up on my blogs that i was missing.

October 11th/13

Today in class we focused on IC3 Material. We finished our 1st part of the IC3 course with a practice exam which i tied with Tyler in getting a mark of 711/1000 which was a pass. I learned that i was very weak at the troubleshooting process but for the most part strong with the rest of it. 

For the rest of the day we spent our time working on Resumes, coverletters and phone interview skills, which i feel comfortable with all of the skills i have attained there. I think i can handle talking to an employer to get an interview.

Today in class we focused a lot on IC3 and specific Microsoft Word. Most of the lessons that we did with word today i knew a lot about. We did a lot of assignments which involved making changes to the format of the document. for example we did an assignment with columns.

Also we finished partitioning and Multi-Booting which Mike and I did focused a lot of our time on Alfred.

Today in class we continued our IC3 studies which we focused on excel more than anything. We were tasked with several assignments to test our skills with the program, just like with what we did yesterday with Microsoft word.

Today in class we did our FINAL IC3 LESSON!!! I got 100% on the practice quiz which made me feel very comfortable about the upcoming exams.

This lesson was all about finding info on the internet. We did many different advanced options for browsing the internet (eg Site:) afterwards we did a debate on Laptops which personally i believe that larger the laptop is better vs being docked on certain location. but my group lost the debate.

November 8/13

Today in class we did planning for our panel exam for our IDS project. We started making a powerpoint presentation for the exam. i put all the information that i could with all the info i have at them time. Personally i feel really comfortable with the planning of the project interview. 

Afterwards we stood in font of the class and asked and answered questions that might be on the panel exam. I feel very comfortable in front of people so doing this was very easy for me and I answered the questions very well.

November 15/13

Today in class we did our 1st part of the 3 exams on IC3, i got a pass with over 10%. Afterwards we worked on our study notes and which i made my template for all my notes to go into. We also did practice exams on A+ on the Compact computers.

November 19/13

Today in class i was very sick so i left soon after I did the final part of the exam. On the Living online exam i got a score of 733/1000 which was a pass by over 100 marks which i am happy about. After the exam me and corey got a motherboard and a CPU cooling unit thing that holds it in place (dont know what its called) and mounted them together. Afterwards i went home

Today in class we did our exam on the second part of IC3 which was the software programs like Microsoft office and Access. In this exam i tied with Bryce and Quinn getting the second best mark in the class with over 80%. Afterwards we did more networking which i finaly found the right driver at the end of the class.

Today in class we reviewed for our exam tomorrow, We did all the IC3 quizzes for computer fundamentals which for the most part i got very good in, afterwards  we did a A+ practice exam which had a lot of grammatical errors, enough to think whoever wrote this had English as a second language.

Today was a review day where we planned out our study book for the future exams, We also did miscolanious things to computers like for me i disabled removed and installed a driver, I changed the setting to the D-LINK router in the class, and i also made a group with a new user on my laptop.

Today in class we had done more notes on networking and trouble shooting a network. I got the best mark in the IC3 quiz in the class which was bad considering i only got 64%. I re-read the info as soon as i got home.

We were assigned to compare the advantages and disadvantages of 3 online chat programs I chose Skype, Steam, and Google Hangout.





After we split into 2 groups and worked on setting up a LAN for Risk 2. before we could finish we had someone come in and speak with us about Abbitsford and Mission eventually becoming technology huge cities.

Today in IT we learned about more networking with IC3 and with A+, we did more stuff with routers and hub/switches. We are tasked with embeding 2 videos explaining Client/Server Networks and Peer 2 Peer Networks. The video's are bellow



 

Understanding Client Server Architecture is a animated pressentation explaining Clint/Server Networks. I like this video because it is easy to understand and i like the visuals.



I believe static IP is important because it helps with maintaining servers so your IP never changes, it also helps with websites and domain names. You can buy a static IP HERE. Dynamic IP is when it is always changing over time. The advantage of it is so that you can be harder to be tracked unlike Static where you do not change, it really just matters what you are using it for.

Today in class we Learned about the World Wide web according to IC3. and he had to do several tasks with networking. 1st we had to find out what network they had.

1st thing you do is right click computer from the start menu and click properties. Afterwards click devise on the manager on the right side, find your NIC in the list of parts and right click it and click properties. Go to details and scroll select service. Once you find find what your NIC is look it up online to find its fastest speed.

Today in class we learned about admin control and permissions in windows xp vista and 7. We also learned about different features each OS has, including how to set permissions for each account on a OS.  The video below shows how to change your permissions of the other accounts in the computer.

Today in class we mostly learned about IC3, which personally i enjoy it more because it has more common knowledge then COMTA+. In class I also worked with Bryce on making a home network on a budget. the excel sheet bellow shows what we have done.

Today in class we had a IC3 Practice test! which i got 2 marks from passing!!!!! arg i am mad about that. but i know what i must study so im doing that while i write. Today also I spent a lot of class time working on the IDS project with brandon, going to different classrooms and discussing the video plan and failing at calling the IT department at the school.

Today as well we learned about printers! which we had hands on experiance with laser printers, printing with labels, and a lable maker. I believe we will be looking at that more in the future

today we learned about BIOS vs CMOS and flashing BIOS.

How to Flash BIOS:

1: Find the BIOS file for the motherboard that you are using, It is usually found on the drivers page for your system under the BIOS section.

2: Depending on your motherboard you can put the bios file onto a USB flash drive and run the BIOS flasher tool within the UEFI BIOS.

3: Otherwise, in the zip file that you downloaded with your BIOS, it has a .exe file that updates the BIOS with just running it.

 Today in class we learned the rest of access from the IC3 book which fortunately i think i am understanding a lot better than i was at the beggining of the course. i managed to get a 20/22 on the IC3 quiz for access which solidified my confidence in it. It is good to have a database instead of a spreadsheet with contact info and inventory is because it is easy to make changes. One way to retreive the data for to run a report is you go to access and click create and click Report.

Today we also did notes on maintenence and regular stuff you should do with your computer to keep it optimized. we fiddled with the computer locating how to get to the mainenence options in the command promt. We also install random cards that were handed to us, me being handed a SCSI card and a sound card.

We learned about how to use a power point pressentation where on the laptop the notes are showing. The steps i took to take it were

1. Turn on the projector and laptop and set the projector to monitor cable connection
2. plug in the monitor cable to the laptop and the projector.
3. press Function (Fn) and F8 until the screen shows up.
4. open your power point presentation and click "Use Presenter View" in the slide show tab in the ribbon
5. Press F5 to begin slide show.

Today in class we did a lot of work with bootable OS with USB, we all booted XP onto our designated desktops. Unfortunately, i had really bad luck with the Hardrive not working, cables on in right, and USB troubles so it took me a very long time to get it done. We also did lesson 5 in IC3 which talked about What kind of software people should use for certain circumstances.

If people need help finding drivers for their computer look HERE. This site here really helped me quickly find the drivers i had to use, although unfortunately i did not have time to install them. Thats what tomorrow is for!

Today in class we chose out own computers to use and learned about troubleshooting. We made flow charts on how to troubleshoot a certain thing. I chose my computer to be alfred. We removed each part of the computer to see what error pops up so that we know how to deal with the problem. We also learned how to convert iso to USB, and we learned to make a copy of a disk, which we mostly did windows XP or Risk

SOUND BLASTER ZXR!!!

Yesterday in class we did a lot of hands on work with devices with some sort of problem or requires effort to get it to work in the first palce. I worked with a remote control that worked with the computer for a good portion of this time, even with the help of thomas i could not get it to work. The remote was handed to Corey and it worked shortly after!!

As well we had a Power supply quiz in which i got 10/17 on which means that i am imroving from my prievious scores from the first few weeks of school. While we did the quiz we also took out the power supply and put it back in to learn how to do it. We had to make sure that everything was functioning when we plugged it back in.

Today in our class we learned more about A+. We also started on Power Supplies which i never knew much about beforehand. The stuff i knew about power supplies was make sure you got your computer in a surge protector during lightning storms, and how to fix a problem when someone plugs too many things in one area of a house (thanks mom).

Today We learned about RAM and the history of the new versions of it. We learned how how to instal and uninstall RAM, basically you put it in the designated slot on the motherboard, and make sure it clicks in, I also learned if you touch the RAM when  your not grounded with the computer you will fry the circuits of the RAM. I also got a bonus mark for the RAM quiz for shortening the link of the website we were given.

Today we learned about the motherboard, along with the sizes like ATX miniATX etc. Today we also learned how to attack and remove a motherboard onto a computer. We also had our hair washed. One thing i need to remember for myself is that PicoATX is smaller than miniATX

Now I didn't not post a blog for Friday September 13th so I am doing it now.

What our class did last friday was we learned a lot about Hardware and the basic history of how it came to be now. There were a lot of acronyms that we learned like SATA and ATA, and SCSI. I found it interesting how many different versions of ATA were created in the years that computers were developed. I find it crazy and hard to believe that our technology has advanced so fast. Just imagine in 10 years we could see terabit USB sticks for 10$
